The members of the multidisciplinary team of the Maternal-Child Care Program are pooling their efforts in order to offer quality care to mothers and their newborns.

At the beginning of pregnancy, women are invited to the prenatal clinic, where nurses inform them of services offered in the program. Later on, information sessions are given  for them to acquire invaluable knowledge about this enriching experience. The future parents are also invited to visit the Maternal-Child Care Unit to familiarize themselves with the Case Room, the Intermediate Care Unit and the Post-Partum Unit.

Two days following discharge, the parents are asked to return to the hospital with their baby for a medical follow-up. The family also has access to a 24-hour telephone hotline.

A liaison nurse ensures that new mothers requiring special support can have access to  CLSC services. Whether it be for home visits by a nurse, questions concerning breast-feeding, or any other matter, every effort is made to ensure that the family receives all the help deemed necessary.

While respecting individual choices, St. Mary’s promotes breast-feeding because of the many advantages it offers to both mother and infant. It should be noted that 75% of new mothers who give birth at St. Mary’s breast-feed their babies, a rate considerably higher than  average.

St. Mary’s remains one of the largest obstetrics centres on the Island of Montreal, despite the lower birthrate of the last few years. It also has one of the lowest percentages of forceps and vacuum extractor births in the province of Quebec.
