The Program of Medicine includes two inpatient units (8 Main & 5 South), Emergency, Critical Care, Medical Day Center, Medical Outpatient Clinics, Cardiology, EEG/EMG, Respiratory Therapy, Pulmonary Function Lab, and GI Lab. Due in part to its size and diversity, the program has its share of unique challenges. During the last two years, much work has been accomplished in establishing the Program of Medicine and integrating the various units and multidisciplinary professionals, as well as coordinating the quality activities of its three quality improvement teams (Emergency, Critical Care, and Inpatient Medicine). |
The vision of the program is to provide excellent, innovative and timely care for patients from admission to post-discharge. Links have been established between hospital and community services in order to provide ongoing care when necessary.
An example of virage ambulatoire is the recent establishment of a Medical Day Center designed to provide priority consultation and testing for community patients with urgent diagnostic or therapeutic needs. The goals of the Center are to prevent hospitalization, decrease the length of stay of admitted patients, provide follow-up once patients are discharged, develop a liaison between hospital and community services, and provide health education to patients and their families. Clients are referred from many sources: Emergency Room, Inpatient Units, Clinics, Family Medicine, community physicians, and CLSCs.
The Program of Medicine will continue to develop links and streamline services between hospital and community in order to benefit its population in providing excellent quality care.
