The roles and responsibilities of the Clinical Ethicist at St. Mary's Hospital Center include:

  1. Case consultation
  2. Medical ethics resource person
  3. Medical ethics education.

CASE CONSULTATION

The ethicist is trained to help make decisions concerning difficult issues related to patient care plans. The ethicist can also help with communication among patients, families and staff members in difficult situations. She is available to everyone at St. Mary's Hospital. Should you wish to consult her,  tell any team member involved in your care who will then contact her on your behalf. Your physician, as the coordinator of your care, must be informed of your request for ethics consultation.

MEDICAL ETHICS RESOURCE PERSON

The clinical ethicist acts as a medical ethics resource person for all hospital ethics committees. The two main ethics committees are the Clinical Ethics Committee, and the Research Ethics Committee. The clinical ethicist chairs the hospital's Clinical Ethics Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss ethical issues arising in the hospital. This committee also makes recommendations regarding various ethical issues. The Research Ethics Committee also meets on a monthly basis and  is responsible for the review, approval and overseeing of all research studies carried out at the hospital.

MEDICAL ETHICS EDUCATION

The clinical ethicist provides medical ethics education to the hospital community through various presentations made throughout the year.
