Many changes have been made to the Surgery Program over the past few years, including a shift to front-loading management. From patient admission to discharge, this new approach takes into account all aspects of hospitalization.

As part of this continuous process, surgeries requiring longer hospitalization are scheduled at the beginning of the week, while those necessitating only a short stay are concentrated at the end of the week. This measure enables the hospital to make more efficient use of beds and nursing resources.

Effective management of the Surgery Program has had a major impact on the number of surgeries, which has risen from 6,377 in 1995 to 8,143 last year. At the same time, front-loading bed management has resulted in significant operational changes. For example, in 1995, 52% of surgery patients required hospitalization, with 48% of these patients being discharged on the day of their surgery; in 1999, the proportions were 33% and 67% respectively.

Recent achievements include the merger of the two surgical care units in order to adapt to the changing volume of activities. In addition, to better serve our clientele, the hours of the Surgical Day Center were recently extended to 8 p.m.
