PROGRAM DEFINITION
The role of the Public Relations Department is to ensure the visibility
of St. Mary's Hospital within its external and internal communities. It supports and
assists all departments by offering its expertise in media relations, organization of
promotional events and other such activities to highlight the visibility of the
organization.
PROGRAM RATIONALE
The Public Relations Department strives to meet the information needs
of its external and internal communities in an efficient manner. It plays an important
role in lending its expertise to all departments by giving them the necessary support to
increase their visibility with their various publics.
GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
Goal:
To promote the organization's values and philosophy through open
communication, both within the hospital and with its outside public.
Objectives:
- to maintain expertise in the field of Public Relations through publications, workshops
or seminars and liaison with the other hospitals in the reseau as well as with community
associations;
- to develop adequate procedures to ensure an efficient and proactive Public Relations
Department;
- to assist and to provide expertise to various departments with issues concerning media
relations, organization of special events and promotion of respective activities;
- to develop and coordinate the implementation of hospital-wide communications program and
media relations plan;
- to maintain close liaison with other hospital Public Relations Departments and various
community associations through collaboration so that the sharing of ideas can be
maximized;
- to maintain Public Relations skills at a consistently high level to be able to
provide informative documents of the highest quality destined for the internal and
external audiences;
- to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the communication processes within the
hospital by solicitating formal and informal feedback from the departments in the
organization and to take appropriate action;
PROGRAM OPERATION
The Public Relations Department is responsible for:
- developing, implementing and evaluating a Communications program, policies and
procedures in keeping with organizational strategic orientations;
- contributing and monitoring developments in the field of Public Relations and ensuring
that the hospital considers recommendations and initiatives;
- assisting all areas of the hospital with their identified needs and helping them to
elaborate strategies and action plans;
- maintaining cooperative relationships with other hospitals in the reseau as well as with
community organizations;
- regularly evaluating the effectiveness of the Public Relations Department to meet
changing, organizational needs and taking appropriate action;
