Introduction

The St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) and Foundation are interested in supporting pilot projects that contribute towards the development of research at SMHC, and that result in an increased amount of external research funding received by the Hospital, and in peer-reviewed publications. The development of high quality research is one of the Hospital’s top priorities, especially in light of its recent designation as a Centre hospitalier affilié universitaire (CHAU), which requires a substantial increase in externally-funded research based at the Hospital.

Objective of the competition

  • To support the development of research at the Hospital, consistent with the Hospital’s CHAU status and research mission. Funding will be provided to support projects in clinical epidemiology and health services research (e.g. research in family medicine, nursing, complementary and alternative medicine, women's health, geriatric psychiatry , emergency services).
  • To produce high-quality, peer-recognized research, with the expectation that results are published and that investigators will apply for external funding (e.g., from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research).

Each pilot project may cover a period up to 1 year, and may comprise, but should not be limited to: preparatory work (e.g. review of the literature, expert consultation).

Funding available

For the 2009-10 competition, $80,000 is available from a general pool of funds to support projects in clinical epidemiology and health services research that are consistent with the research mission of the Hospital. Up to $20,000 may be allocated per project.

Eligibility

Investigators affiliated with McGill or another university may apply, on condition that the Principal Investigator is on the St. Mary’s Hospital staff and/or is an Associate Member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies, and that the project must take place at the St. Mary’s. Investigators who are funded in one year are not eligible to apply for another grant from this competition for the subsequent 2 years. For example, if an investigator is funded in 2008, s/he can only apply for another grant from this competition as early as 2011. In addition, only one project per investigative team will be allocated.

Option for “pre-screening”
If applicants are not sure whether they are qualified to assume the role of Principal Investigator, and/or if they are not sure whether their project meets the eligibility criteria of the competition, they may submit an up-to-date CV, as well as an abstract of their research project (maximum 300 words). This will prevent an investigator, who may not meet the eligibility criteria, from having to prepare a full application. The CV and cover letter must be submitted at least 2 months prior to the application deadline.
