The 2009-2010 edition of the CARE competition once again attracted several high quality proposals; however,
two projects stood out and received a $20,000 grant each.

$600,000 for research on delirium in older patients
Delirium (also called “acute confusion”) is frequent in older patients, both in hospitals and in long-term care facilities. The research grants awarded to St. Mary’s Hospital Center will improve our knowledge about the prevalence and risk factors of delirium, as well as the factors that influence recovery from delirium.

New accreditation for the Research Ethics Committee of St Mary’s Hospital Center
The Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux (MSSS) has
recognized the outstanding quality of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of St Mary’s Hospital
Center (SMHC) by granting it the ability to review, approve, and monitor projects involving minors
and incompetent adults. This new accreditation further fortifies the University-affiliated Hospital
Centre status of the hospital, as well as boosts some new research projects.
