Internship in Psychology
As a university affiliated hospital serving a culturally diverse community, we are able to provide a variety of experiences and increased flexibility regarding the duration and intensity of internships. Internships are available to fulfill either practicum or full-year internship university requirements. Our goal is to collaborate with interns to identify areas of interest and meet their particular needs. Interns are expected to take a proactive approach to their internship experience, seeking out the many learning opportunities available to them.
An important component of the internship experience at St. Mary’s Hospital is attendance in the weekly Clinical and Grand Rounds. While they are psychiatric –driven, the in-patient cases are presented in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary focus of care. In Grand Rounds, students are exposed to presentations from a variety of health professionals and researchers within the hospital or from other institutions on relevant clinical issues.
Another element of training are the weekly Psychology clinical meetings and the monthly journal club. Discussions in the clinical meeting focus on out-patient clinic case presentations and discussions for care and treatment plan while the Journal Club stresses on continued development of knowledge and professional skills, as supported by current topics and scientific literature.
Supervision
Interns will receive individual supervision and group supervision. Individual supervision focuses on psychotherapy: We will try to match supervisor and student based on the latter’s areas of clinical interest, theoretical orientation, and availability of both supervisor and supervisee. Group supervision focuses on assessment and in-depth case studies following a cross-cultural psychology approach given the multiethnic population that SMHC serves. Students will also receive group supervision for their work in psychological testing.
Evaluation
Halfway through the internship, interns will meet with their respective supervisor(s) and one of the Internship Coordinators to receive feedback about their overall progress and performance. At the same time, interns will be asked to provide their feedback about their internship experience at SMHC.
Application Process
St. Mary’s Hospital is not a member of APPIC. However, this internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant. The only information that will be released to applicants prior to the release of the APPIC Match results will be whether or not the applicant remains under consideration for admission. Students unfamiliar with the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers’ regulations may obtain more information at www.appic.org.
Application information and instructions are available below. The deadline to send applications is December 31 of the current year. Interviews with the coordinators are generally held throughout January of the new year. Students who wish to apply for internships at other times during the year will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and should contact one of the coordinators.
